All I could do was say thank you. I held your burning hand as you took heavy breaths. You lay in this sterile room, it craved the touch of life you brought to everything. It missed the warmth you carried into every space. Or maybe I missed it. Maybe I need your warmth again.

Your beautiful, bright smile always eased my worries. It never faded, not even in the darkest times. As the monitor beeped, you lay in that foreign room, and somehow, that cheeky smile still met your lips. You were still easing my worries, even as you became my worry. You still had that magical touch, you freed me from my trapped thoughts. Oh, how I wish I could have freed you from yours.

I still feel your gentle touch on my shoulders, your sweet scent filling my lungs, your laugh echoing in my mind. But it will never be enough. The way your eyes crinkled when you smirked, the little notes you left me, the way every hug ended with a squeeze, how you knew every plant by heart—that’s what I’ll miss. That’s what the world will miss. Those little moments were when I truly saw you, when you were free from those trapped thoughts. Oh, how I wish you had always been free from them.

I will miss the future we promised each other—every pinky promise I am forced to break. We swore we would never grow apart, but I will grow without you. Our silly, intertwined life is over, and I am left to keep moving forward alone. My girl, I don’t know how. It will never feel right because your trapped thoughts are mine now. I will cling to them with every fiber of my being. Oh, how I wish never to be freed of them. 

So every time the wind blows, a frog hops, or a tree sprouts—I will see you. I will never not see you. And I will wait, because what else is there to do?
